Online Scams Are Targeting Our Seniors — Here’s How We Fight Back

19th June 2025

Online scams targeting seniors

At Woodstock Academy, we believe that digital confidence is a right not a luxury. But while technology opens up a world of connection and independence, it also brings new threats that disproportionately impact older Australians: online scams.Recent data from the ACCC’s Scamwatch tells a confronting story. In 2023 alone, Australians over 65 lost over $120 million to scams, more than any other age group. But the damage goes beyond dollars. These crimes often leave behind deep emotional wounds: embarrassment, anxiety, even a loss of trust in the digital world. And that’s exactly why Woodstock Academy exists. We’re not just teaching seniors how to use devices, we’re giving them the tools to stay safe, spot red flags, and feel confident online. From learning how to identify phishing messages and fake websites to understanding privacy settings and scam call tactics, our workshops are built to empower older Australians in a rapidly changing world.Because when you know what to look out for, you’re no longer a target, you’re in control. If you or someone you care about is unsure about online safety, we’re here to help. Join one of our hands-on group sessions or book a one-on-one session tailored to individual needs. Let’s build a stronger, safer digital community, one lesson at a time.Stay smart. Stay safe. Stay connected.

What Is “The Cloud”… And Should You Trust It?

26th June 2025

You’ve probably heard people say, “Just save it to the cloud.” But what is the cloud, really? The cloud is just a way to store your photos, documents, and files on the internet instead of only on your phone or computer. Think of it like a secure online storage box that you can open from anywhere; your home, your grandkids’ place, or even while on holiday. Is It Safe?
Yes! The cloud is built to be safe. Big companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft spend millions to protect your data with very strong security. Your files are locked behind passwords, and often extra steps (like codes sent to your phone) make it even harder for anyone else to get in.
What Are the Benefits?
Peace of mind
If your phone or computer breaks, your files won’t be lost. They’re still safe in the cloud.
Access from anywhere
You can log in from any device and get your photos or documents anytime.
Affordable
Most cloud services offer free space, and you only pay if you want extra storage.
Are There Any Downsides?
Absolutely!
- You need internet to access your files.
- If you forget your password, it can be tricky (but not impossible!) to get back in.
- Like anything online, there’s always a small risk but no more than using online banking or email.
Our Verdict
At Woodstock Academy, we think the cloud is a smart, helpful tool. It's not perfect, but the benefits, especially safety, convenience, and peace of mind, far outweigh the small risks.
If you're still unsure, come along to one of our friendly workshops. We’ll explain it step by step and even help you set it up if you'd like.Remember, you’re not alone on this journey, we’re here to guide you every click of the way.
